Students will research the following information about their explorer:

1. What year and month did they sail on their first journey?

2. What city did they sailed from? (need to find a city near a port. Not sailed from Spain) Google this: "which city did "insert explorer name" sail from on his first journey"
you should be able to find it.

3. What was their original destination?
4. Where did they sail to?
5. Who financed their journey?
6. What was the purpose of their journey?

6. What were the additional voyages? answer the above questions for those journeys as well.

Where do I put my research?
Copy and paste the above questions to your explorer project page at the right.

When the research is completed.
We will place mark the beginning and ending of each journey and create a timeline of the explorer journeys using Google Earth.

Tools:
  1. Google Earth
  2. Online Research and Information Literacy Skills
  3. Wiki or Collaborative Document
Task:

Students create presentations of the routes that European explorers had taken to North America and explain the reason for their journeys.

Procedure:
1. Divide the class into groups around one of either of the English explorers that has been selected.
2. Students collaborate bringing together the online research that they gather using a wiki. This includes information, images, videos or files that support the students' point-of-view. Teacher looks at appropriateness of the data, ensures correct referencing and information before moving on to next stage.
3. Students synthesize the information into specific locations in order to include them into google earth placemarks.
4. Students transfer the data into location placemarks, which develop tours within Google Earth. Placemark locations should relate specifically to the information that is contained in the placemark.
5. Groups present their tours to the class or record in order to share with a wider audience for feedback.
